WILLITS >> Four CORE Wrestling Club members topped the field in their respective divisions last weekend at the Bob Colvig Invitational in Willits.
“With the 11 wrestlers we took, everyone set small goals in the tournament and worked on achieving them,” CORE coach Danny Cuellar said. “Of course, all goals can’t be achieved, but boy did they work their tails off to get them.”
Bringing home first-place medals were Eric Holley (6-8 under, 53 pounds), who went 3-0 with two pins and one technical fall; William Villa (10-under, 67 pounds), who went 3-0 with one pin; Sampson Wetmore (12-under, 86-98 pounds), who went 4-0 with one technical fall and two wins in sudden-death; and Tucker Heywood (12-under, 98 pounds), who went 3-0 with two pins and one technical fall.
Second-place medals went to Jessie Taylor Jr (6-8 under, 53 pounds), who went 3-1 with three pins; Jessie Richardson IV (6-8-under, 62 pounds) who went 3-1 with two technical falls; Villa (12-under, 67 pounds), who went 1-1 with one technical fall; and Ryder White Eagle (middle school boys, 132 pounds), who went 2-1 with two pins.
Bringing home third-place medals were Jonathan “JJ” Blue Jr. (6-8 under, 62 pounds), who went 2-2 with one pin; and Heywood, who double-bracketed for the first time this season, going 2-2 in middle school boys, 100-105 pounds.
While not all of CORE’s wrestlers came away with medals, many had a successful day nonetheless.
“One wrestler that comes to mind is Gabriel Ruiz, who set two goals,” Cuellar said. “In one match he ended up accomplishing a third goal, which was getting his first victory. It was an awesome day or those little things. Also, being able to coach wrestlers without having to say a lot feels real, but to do it with an 8-year-old kid is pretty awesome. Eric Holley has put in so much work it is a privilege to be along on his journey.”
Though they took the weekend off, CORE wrestlers Wyatt and Jaydee Hooten still had a fun time, competing in the dirt bike Battle at the Ranch in Kelseyville where their mom, Jessica Hooten, won the women’s division.
