WINDSOR >> CORE Wrestling Club members had a busy weekend in Windsor, site of the North Coast Invitational on Saturday and the North Coast Kids Classic on Sunday.
CORE placed second out of 22 teams Sunday, including six first-place medals. Bringing home two firsts was Kaitlyn Crow. She not only won the 12-and-under 74-pound division with a 2-0 record that featured two pins, but also the 12-and-under 78-pound division with a 2-1 record that included one pin.
Other firsts went to Eric Holley in the 12-and-under 74-pound class with a 3-0 record, all of his wins by pin; Colin Crow in the 10-and-under 59-63-pound class with a 4-0 record that included two pins and one technical fall; Sampson Wetmore in the 12-and-under 92-pound division with a 3-0 record that featured two technical falls; and William Villa in the 10-and-under 67-pound division with a 4-0 record that included three pins.
Villa also finished third in the 12-and-under division (67-70 pounds) with a 1-2 record.
Wyatt Hooten placed second in the 12-and-under division (67-70 pounds) with a 2-1 record, Hector Barocio came in third in the 10-and-under 77-pound class with a 2-2 record and one pin, and Jessie Richardson IV finished third in the 8-and-under 62-pound division with a 3-2 record that included two pins and a technical fall.
“It was so awesome to see their growth,” CORE coach Danny Cuellar said. “One kid in mind is Jessie Richardson IV. This kid had some amazing takedowns and he doesn’t even understand it yet. The throws we saw from him were crazy.”
Cuellar also praised the efforts of Kaitlyn Crow and Holley.
“She had been getting beat by a wrestler 14-1, and she not only beat him, but put a whooping on him before she pinned him honorably,” Cuellar said of Crow. “And our takedown machine, Eric Holley, scored the most points in the tournament with 60 match points. What a day of wrestling.”
During Saturday’s action at the North Coast Invitational, Kaitlyn Crow added another first-place finish, winning the girls middle school 76-pound division, pinning two of her opponents.
