12-under traveling softball team posts 4-2 record during holiday tournament in Benicia

BENICIA >> The Lake County Diamonds 12-under summer softball team took home individual rings as well as a second-place trophy in the gold bracket at the Del Holson Firecracker Tournament July 4-5 at Benicia Community Park in Benicia.
The Diamonds followed up a 2-1 Saturday with a 2-1 Sunday, falling 15-3 to the Benicia Outlaws Elite A team in the championship game Sunday. Losing pitcher Araya Dotson went 1-for-2 with a triple while teammates Ava Cockrill and Kaelani Becerril both went 2-for-2 in the loss. Estella Del Sarto went 1-for-2.
Lake County won each of its first two games Sunday to reach the championship game, beginning with a 12-2 win over the Benicia Outlaws Poole team. Emmie Hernandez earned the pitching win while Dotson went 3-for-3 with a triple and Avery English went 3-for-3. Becerril, Addison Brown and Cataleya Valencia also had hits.
Moving to the semifinals, the Diamonds delivered with a 10-9 walk-off victory. Dotson was the winning pitcher while also going 1-for-3 with a triple. Cockrill went 4-for-4 while Hernandez, Becerril and Brown all had three hits. English went 2-for-4 while Valencia and Del Sarto each had a hit.
During Saturday action, the Diamonds opened the tournament with a 6-2 over the PHBA Panthers. Dotson went 2-for-3 with an inside-the-park home run, Hernandez went 2-for-3, and Becerril and Cockrill each had a hit.
Lake County won its next game, 8-3, against the Benicia Outlaws Poole team behind the pitching of Hernandez, who also went 2-for-2. Becerril also had two hits. Del Sarto, Dotson, Cockrill and Faith Myers all had a hit.
The Diamonds dropped their final game Saturday to the same Benicia Outlaws Elite A team they would lose to in Sunday’s championship game, this time by a 3-0 final score. Dotson was the losing pitcher.
Lake County was held without a hit.
