Wildcats score in bottom of seventh inning to snap 2-2 tie

FERNDALE >> Lower Lake tied the score with a run in the top of the seventh inning only to watch Ferndale win it 3-2 with a run in the bottom half Saturday during non-league softball action in Ferndale.
Lower Lake (1-3) went 1-2 on its two-day, three-game north state road swing, capped by the loss to Ferndale.
The Wildcats (2-0) scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to go up 2-0 before Lower Lake tied it with single runs in the fifth and seventh. Eden Sparks, the Trojans’ freshman shortstop, drove in both of the team’s runs while going 1-for-3 at the plate. Heidi Ortega went 3-for-4 while Hailee McRae (1-for-3) tripled and Leanna Ortega (1-for-2) doubled.
Madelyn Garner started the game for Lower Lake and worked 3 2/3 innings before giving way to Crystal Pepper, who worked the final three innings and took the loss. Garner struck out two and walked five while Pepper struck out five and walked one.
The Trojans were one out away from forcing extra innings when Ferndale scored the winning run.
Lower Lake opens its North Central League I schedule on the road Thursday against three-time defending champion St. Helena at 4 p.m. The Trojans will be looking to improve on last year’s 6-8 league finish.
