LOWER LAKE >> Lower Lake beat Upper Lake 17-2 in the season opener for both varsity baseball teams Wednesday afternoon in Lower Lake.

The Trojans (1-0) took a 17-0 lead into the fifth inning. Upper Lake (0-1), no-hit up to that point, scored twice but the game was called because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Lower Lake scored five time in the bottom of the first before adding three more runs in the second against losing pitcher George Rahmer, who worked the first two innings for Upper Lake, striking out two and walking none.

The Trojans roughed up the Upper Lake bullpen for seven more runs in the third and two in the fourth.

Brody Shields went 3-for-4 with a triple and six RBIs for Lower Lake while Ashton Hartmann went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Adrian Negrete went 2-for-4 with a RBI.

AJ Myers, the first of three Lower Lake pitchers, worked the first two innings for the victory, allowing no runs on no hits, striking out three and walking one. Hartmann and Shields followed him to the mound. Shields struck out five over the final two innings.

Mikel Compton went 1-for-1 and walked twice for Upper Lake while Rahmer (1-for-3) had the Cougars’ only other hit. Jimmy Sanchez drove in a run.

Upper Lake returns six starters overall from last year’s 3-17 team, not all of whom were available to Cougars head coach Don Meri against Lower Lake.

“We have some pieces, but I don’t have every piece,” Meri said of his 2026 club.

Upper Lake started a pair of sophomores and one freshman against Lower Lake.

“There is a learning curve we’ll go through,” Meri said. “Today we struggled with playing catch.”

The Trojans are scheduled to play Saturday in Vallejo at 1 p.m. Upper Lake hits the road Tuesday to play Swett High School in Crockett at 3:30 p.m.
