About Athlete of the Year
Juniors or seniors who play at least two varsity sports are eligible to receive the Athlete of the Year award, which is based solely on how an athlete performs in sanctioned high school sports during the current sports year. It is not a career achievement award nor does it taken into account student government/club activities and other similar awards. Athletes must be in good academic standing at their respective schools, but GPA plays no other role in the selection process. All-County, All-League, All-Empire and and All-State honors (or the equivalent, depending on the sport) are taken into account along with an athlete’s contribution to his/her team’s success. Input is solicited from county and out-of-county coaches. The final decision on Athlete of the Year winners is made by Lake County Sports and no one else. Ties occasionally occur when two athletes are so close that breaking the tie is next to impossible. Siblings have won the Athlete of the Year award five times: Heather and Jason James of Kelseyville, Tonya and Trisha White of Clear Lake, Kelsey and Ashlyn Welton, both two-time winners, of Middletown, Adriana Lopez and Junior Fernandez of Upper Lake, and Logan and Brock Barrick of Kelseyville.
