Athletes of the week
(Published during the high school sports season)
(For the week of Oct. 6 through Oct. 12)
Boys
Ryan Halverson (Jr.) Middletown High School football
At 5-foot-5 and 145 pounds, he’s far from the biggest player on the football field, especially as linebackers go, but Ryan Halverson is getting the job done for the Middletown Mustangs (4-1 league, 5-2 overall) this season. During Middletown’s most recent win, a 52-6 victory at home Friday against the Kelseyville Knights, Halverson recorded a team-best 21 tackles. Head coach Kurtis Woodard called him the “Tasmanian devil” of the Middletown defense.

Girls
Aimee Schaefers (Sr.) Upper Lake High School volleyball
The Upper Lake volleyball team beat Clear Lake and gave league title contender Cloverdale all it could want last week in a four-set loss. The Cougars, 4-6 in the league standings, have definitely improved this season and senior middle hitter Aimee Schaefers is one of the reasons why. Schaefers had eight kills and six blocks in a three-set home victory over Clear Lake on Tuesday, then came back with a 12-kill, 11-block effort on Thursday in a road match at Cloverdale.
