RENO >> Kaitlyn Crow and her CORE Wrestling Club teammates brought home eight medals as well as a championship belt home from the Rocky Mountain Nationals Rumble in Reno event last weekend.
The 11-strong CORE contingent placed 24th out of 191 teams.
Crow reached the finals in three different brackets, winning one and earning second-place medals in the other two.
“All the CORE coaches and I are very proud to be in her corner,” CORE spokesperson MaryAnn Doud said. “She is very humble and sweet, but when that whistle blows, she is all business and determined to do whatever it takes to get her hand raised.”
Added Doud, “Kaitlyn would like thank her wrestling partner, Wyatt Hooten, her brother Colin, her dad and her coaches for helping her reach her goals and get her first belt at Rumble Reno.”
Crow won the 10-and-under 72-pound division with a 3-0 record that included two pins and one technical fall. She placed second in both the 10-and-under 80-pound division and 12-and-under 72-pound class, going 3-1 with three pins in each.
Eric Holley placed third in the 7-and-under 54-pound division with a 3-2 record while Tucker Heywood (11-and-under, 106 pounds) and Liliana Williams (12-and-under, 116 pounds) also brought home third-place medals.
Colin Crow finished fourth in the 8-and-under 54-pound division and fifth in the 9-and-under 53-pound division, going a combined 7-4 with one pin and three technical falls. He just missed in the 8-and-under 58-pound division, finishing 3-2 with one pin.
Daniel Clark placed sixth in the 13-and-under 72-pound class.
“It was very exciting and fulfilling as coaches to see these kids perform well on such a high platform,” CORE coach Daniel Hooten said. “Eric, Tucker, Lily and Daniel all placed for the first time at Rumble Reno. Eric wrestled with a lot of speed and technique, earning himself a third-place medal. Colin Crow had the most matches of the day, and the majority of them were battles; kid is a dog. He went home with two medals.”
Added Hooten, “Tucker wrestled with strength and a no-quit attitude, earning himself third place. Lily Williams had a great performance for her first time competing in Reno. She was right there with the top of her class.”
Jessie Richardson, Ryder White Eagle, Timothy Williams, Tony Howland and Wyatt Hooten also competed but did not place.
“Wyatt Hooten, Jesse Richardson, Tony Howland, Timmy Williams and Ryder White Eagle fell short of placing in some very tough brackets,” Hooten said. “They are all eager and hungry to come back next year and get revenge.”
Added Hooten, “The CORE family is very proud of our wrestlers and the courage it takes to get on the big stage. We will be training for state in Fresno next month.”
