BENICIA >> Wyatt Hooten went 5-1 on the day, taking a first in the 10-and-under 71-pound division and second in the 12-and-under 76-pound division Sunday as CORE Wrestling sent six wrestlers to the Battle of the Straight in Benicia.
“The kids heard there was a tournament and wanted to attend without an official practice,” CORE head coach Daniel Hooten said. “I wasn’t going to tell them no, so we threw them in the fire. They proved to be ready, and everyone came home with a medal.”
Ryder White Eagle went undefeated and took first in the 135-pound middle school bracket while Colin Crow placed second in the 10-and-under 43-pound division and third in the 10-and-under 56-pound division.
Kaitlin Crow placed third in the 12-and-under 83-pound division and fourth in the 12-and-under 76-pound division. Other third-place finishes went to Jaydee Hooten in the 6-and-under 56-pound division and Eric Holley in the 8-and-under 53-pound division.
“All the wrestlers looked good having not practiced, and saw what we have to work on,” Hooten said. “I’m excited for this season of wrestling.”
