WILLITS >> Logan Olivares, Wyatt Hooten and Daniel Clark of the CORE Wrestling Club all came away with firsts in their respective weight divisions Sunday during the fifth annual Bob Colvig Invitational at Willits High School.
Olivares won the 42-49-pound, 6-and-under pee wee division. Hooten topped the field in the 60-66, 10-and-under weight class, and Clark won the under-12 novice, 55-69-pound weight division. Hooten also won a second-place medal in the 10-and-under intermediate, 66-72-pound weight class while Olivares finished third in the 8-and-under bantam, 42-46-pound division.
Other second-place medals went to Jaydee Hooten and Amazing Pena, who won all three of his matches by pin.
Senova Cole and Deegan Clark took home third-place medals.
Jessie Taylor Jr., Tucker Heywood and Aniya Meyer placed fourth, and Eric Holley came in fifth.
“I’m very proud of all our wrestlers that attended the fifth annual Bob Colvig Tournament,” CORE head coach Daniel Hooten said. “Logan is new to our squad, he has been with us for only two weeks, and he showed tremendous determination. He double-bracketed and won first in his weight class.”
Added Hooten, “Wyatt proved again his reputation of being an exciting wrestler to watch. He also double-bracketed, winning first in his weight class and taking second place in a heavier bracket, losing with a score of 3-0 against an opponent eight pounds heavier.
“Daniel Clark won first in his bracket and showed everyone the best example of sportsmanship on the day. During his final match of the day, he showed his opponent respect and wrestled her fairly. It’s an amazing thing to see a young man know how to be respectful of another person during a match, especially when it’s our fellow Gladiator,” Hooten added.
