Upper Lake A team routs Middletown 75-6

Cayden Beecher’s triple-double helps Wildcats close out perfect regular season

UPPER LAKE >> Upper Lake Middle School’s A boys basketball team went out with a bang, beating Middletown 75-6 in the Wildcats’ home and regular-season finale Monday night in Upper Lake.

It was eighth-grade night as the Wildcats honored their 11 eighth-graders, nine of whom play for the A team. Recognized were Dezmond Solomon, Junior Peregrina, Bennett Guardino, Gage Schramm, Jax Crabtree, Jose Delgado Beecher, Dartayan Martini, Cam Allison, Cayden Becher, Jaime Urucha and Joshua Ponce.

Upper Lake’s A team finishes league play at 8-0 and the regular season at 13-0. It will be the No. 1 seed in the Lake County Junior High Athletic League postseason tournament later this week in Kelseyville.

Against Middletown on Monday, Upper Lake held an 18-0 lead after one quarter, increasing its advantage to 40-4 by halftime and 56-6 through three quarters.

“The boys played as a team, shared the ball and showed great energy on both ends of the floor,” Upper Lake head coach Dani Paige Gudmundson said. “We had a few missed layups and turnovers we could’ve lived without, but overall I couldn’t be prouder of this group. Their effort, teamwork and growth this season have been something special to watch.”

Cayden Beecher led the Wildcats with a triple-double of 27 points, 12 steals and 10 rebounds while also adding six assists. Jose Delgado Beecher finished with 16 points, Xielan Florez had eight points, eight rebounds, five assists and five steals, and Schramm chipped in seven points, six rebounds and eight steals.

Middletown won the B game 31-12. Scoring leaders were not provided.
