SACRAMENTO >> Five matches and five straight-set wins for the Never Say Die 18s club volleyball team Saturday during a Northern California Volleyball Association Power League tournament at the Capital Sports Center in Sacramento.

“The girls are starting to come together very nicely,” Never Say Die head coach Marci Psalmonds said. “We struggled a little at the beginning of the day and came on strong at the end for the championship match. It was like a light switched on and nothing could stop them.”

Never Say Die beat Core 18 Elite 25-15, 25-20, Manteca Flight U18-Mikaela 25-15, 25-16, Golden State 17-Gold 25-12, 25-23, Slainte 17-Black 25-11, 27-25, and Kalani 17s/18s-Lei 25-23, 25-6.

Carly Johnson led the 18s with 25 kills, seven blocks and 20 aces while Mati Mateer had 45 kills and 35 digs. AJ Wurm finished with 74 assists, 41 digs and nine aces.

“It was really fun to watch the power they showed in the last game,” Psamonds said. “A lot of hard kills, great saves and many aces. Everyone contributed somehow in each match and did a great job working together.”

The 18s finished the tournament with 53 aces, 172 digs and 111 kills.

Next up is a tournament March 7-8 in South Lake Tahoe.
