Lower Lake registers first win of season, evens record at 1-1

MAXWELL >> Lower Lake High School’s junior varsity football team rolled past Maxwell 34-0 in a non-league game Friday evening in Maxwell.
While complete statistics were not reported from the game, head coach Tony Laiwa praised the contributions of Landyn McClean, Wyatt Chalecki, Aidan Ochoa and Richard Occhino.
“Landyn McClean, who leads our linebackers, got called up to be a captain this week and he definitely showed us why he deserves it,” Laiwa said. “He was all over the field making plays, and big plays. As he said to us, he has a bucket list for the season and one of them was a pick, and not only a pick, but a pick-six (touchdown) to help give us huge momentum.”
McClean just missed a second pick-six, according to Laiwa.
Chalecki, a running back, rushed for 202 yards, scored three touchdowns and a two-point conversion. He was denied another touchdown when it was wiped out by a holding penalty.
“I’m also really proud of the leader on the offensive line, Aidan Ochoa,” Laiwa said. “A captain on our team, he had them (linemen) coming together in the trenches.”
Added Laiwa, “Richard Occhino was great, too. He’s a kid who isn’t afraid of getting dirty and flying to get someone. I love his tenacity on our defensive line.”
Lower Lake opened the season with a 30-6 home loss on Aug. 27.
“I’m just really proud of these boys and how our team responded well from this challenged short week and bounced back from last week’s loss,” Laiwa said.
The JV team has a bye next Friday (the varsity is home to play Lindhurst in its season opener) before returning to action Friday, Sept. 18 at Fort Bragg.
