Kelseyville blanks Credo in non-league action, improves to 5-1-1

ROHNERT PARK >> Tuning up for their North Central League I opener against Clear Lake, the only team that has beaten Kelseyville so far this season, the Knights shut out Credo 3-0 in non-league girls soccer action Friday in Rohnert Park.
Kelseyville (5-1-1) is home Thursday to play Clear Lake (5-0-1) in the NCL I opener for both teams at 4:30 p.m. Clear Lake beat Kelseyville 2-0 in the season opener for both teams Aug. 18 in Kelseyville.
All five of the Knights’ victories this season have been shutouts.
“The Lady Knights continue to show great energy, teamwork and determination,” Kelseyville head coach Irma Rodriguez said. “We were a little off at times, but what I love seeing is that the girls don’t stay there. They reset, regroup and get back to playing together as a team. That growth and ability to fight through those moments is something to be proud of.”
Kelseyville built a 2-0 halftime lead on the strength of goals by Mikaela Rico, assisted by Vanessa Reyes, and Hiliana Rico.
“Credo had a few opportunities and sent some shots toward the goal, but goalie Grace Hobbs was there to make the stops and keep Credo off the scoreboard,” Rodriguez said.
Kelseyville picked up an insurance goal in the second half on a Kylee Denham shot over the goalkeeper’s head.
“Credo continued to send the ball forward and, at times, managed to get past our defenders,” Rodriguez said. “Our defense wasn’t having it. They battled, caught up and shut down Credo’s opportunities before they could turn them into goals.”
Standouts for the Knights, according to Rodriguez, were Mikaela Rico, Reyes, Denham, Hiliana Rico, Dakota Burton, Brooke Poff, Lexxi Pantaleon, Ximena Herren, Ana Gutierrez and Aubrey Mullen.
Kelseyville’s final tuneup before its rematch Thursday with Clear Lake is an away game Tuesday against Ferndale at 4 p.m.
