UPPER LAKE >> In a penalty-kick shootout that went down to the wire, the Kelseyville Knights beat Credo on Thursday night to advance to the championship game of the Tyler Duncan Memorial Tournament at Upper Lake High School.

Kelseyville (4-2) draws either Fortuna or Fort Bragg in the tournament finals Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in Upper Lake.

After the two teams battled to a scoreless deadlock in regulation, the game came down to a penalty-kick shootout that ended with Miguel Corona, Kelseyville team captain, booting through the winning goal to snap a 3-3 tie.

“Two very evenly matched teams,” Kelseyville head coach Kc White said. “Both teams had good opportunities, both teams wanted the W, but we stuck together and pulled through.”

After both teams missed their first penalty kick, Credo hit its next three while Kelseyville made two of three – by Luis Alvarado and Sebastian Cacho.

Diego Serrato blocked what would have been a game winner on Credo’s fifth shot, then Kelseyville’s Diego Rico scored to tie it up at 3-3. Credo missed its sixth and seventh shots and the Knights missed their sixth. Corona came through on Kelseyville’s seventh shot, driving it into the back of the net.

“I told my guys, win or lose, this was a great moment to be a part of, but it’s a hell of a lot better to win,” White said. “It’s not every day you get to participate in a shootout, and they seized the moment.”

White likes the direction his team is taking as it approaches the start of its North Central League I schedule.

“We are growing more and more confident right now and peaking at the exact right time for league next week,” White said. “As a coach of many of these guys for four years, we have grown into a family. We have endured the lowest lows (combined eight victories the last two years) and now we are battle tested from playing in the grueling winter season. I could not be prouder.”

In other tournament action Thursday:

Calistoga 2, Lower Lake 1

Agustin Sanchez scored Lower Lake’s lone goal, assisted by Adrian Guzman, in a tournament loss to the Calistoga Wildcats.

Calistoga scored in the final five minutes to snap a 1-1 tie.

Lower Lake (2-3) returns to action Saturday against an opponent to be determined.
