ANGWIN >> The Mendocino College women’s volleyball team got off to a solid start before falling to Pacific Union College, a four-year school, in scrimmage action Tuesday night in Angwin.
Mendocino claimed the first set before Pacific Union battled back for a 24-26, 25-18, 25-11, 25-18 victory.
“Our serve receive was the best it’s been all season,” Mendocino College head coach Kat Edmonds said. “We are really improving there and it’s really exciting to see. We were also extremely aggressive in the first set.”
Maddy Brewster (Clear Lake) led the offense for the Eagles with 10 kills and Stella Hill (Clear Lake) added six kills and 14 digs. Brewster also led the defense with 15 digs while Breanna Pyzer (Middletown) had 12 digs.
“We started off on fire,” Edmonds said of the first-set win. “We made a few mistakes in the second set and we kind of let that determine the rest of the game. We couldn’t get ourselves out of that funk for the next three sets.”
Edmonds said there plenty of positives for her players.
“They played hard and there were some great rallies, but we just couldn’t finish,” she said. “It was a great experience to play a four-year university. We know what we need to work on.”
Mendocino College setter Jayden Paulich (Kelseyville) recorded 25 assists as well as six digs and two aces.
The Eagles (3-6) returns to action Thursday against Feather River at 1 p.m. in the Delta Classic at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton.
