Knights, Cougars, Mustangs also wrap up play in Tyler Duncan Memorial Tournament

UPPER LAKE >> Playing to a 0-0 standoff in regulation, the St. Bernard Crusaders and Clear Lake Cardinals let a shootout decide the girls championship game Saturday at the Tyler Duncan Memorial Tournament in Upper Lake.
St. Bernard (4-0-1) won that shootout 4-3 to take home the first-place trophy.
“I’m very proud of the team,” Clear Lake head coach Gustavo Carbajal said. “They played their hearts out.”
Shootout goal scorers were not provided.
Clear Lake (4-0-1) hosts Anderson Valley on Wednesday at 6:15 p.m.
In other final-round Tyler Duncan games played Saturday:
Fortuna 1, McKinleyville 1
At Upper Lake, Kelseyville and Fortuna battled to a 1-1 tie before the Huskies beat the Knights 4-3 in a penalty shootout.
Both teams scored in the first half of regulation. Fortuna went up 1-0, but Kylee Denham’s goal evened the score 1-1.
“The second half was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams fighting hard for that go-ahead goal and doing everything they could to avoid a penalty shootout,” Kelseyville head coach Irma Rodriguez said. “Neither team was willing to give in.”
Added Rodriguez, “Unfortunately, the penalty shootout went in Fortuna’s favor and the Lady Knights fell in a heartbreaking finish.”
Rodriguez praised the play of first-year player Grace Hobbs at keeper.
“She has stepped into the goal box for the first time ever and has done an amazing job,” Rodriguez said. “She has stepped up when her team needed her and showed tremendous courage and determination. We couldn’t be more proud of her effort.”
Kelseyville (3-1-1) lost 11 seniors to graduation but continues to make progress with a much younger roster this season.
“Today they showed heart, determination, teamwork and fight,” Rodriguez said. “Sometimes the result doesn’t go your way, but the effort and growth of this team are something to be proud of.”
The Knights return to action Thursday in Tomales at 4:30 p.m.
Del Norte 1, Upper Lake 0
At Upper Lake, the Upper Lake Cougars fell to the Del Norte Warriors in a final-round game and defensive struggle at the Tyler Duncan Memorial Tournament.
Charlie Robbins had nine saves for Upper Lake (0-5).
“Freshman Maci Jones was awarded an All-Tournament ball for her outstanding and consistent play on the pitch,” Upper Lake head coach Jim Keck said. “We are looking forward to our first league game on the 10th and having all of our players back and ready to go.”
Upper Lake opens its North Central League I schedule Sept. 10 in Lowr Lake at 6:15 p.m.
Middletown 4, Fort Bragg 1
At Upper Lake, Ally Cherry, Isa Barnes, Sophia Perez and Trinity Wood all had goals for Middletown (3-3) in a shutout victory over the Fort Bragg Timberwolves.
For Barnes, a senior and first-year soccer player, it was the first goal of her high school career.
“The team played amazing together,” Middletown head coach Cassi Clark said. “They are definitely finding their vibe on the pitch. I am very proud of the.”
The Mustangs visit Calistoga on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
