PETALUMA >> The St. Vincent Mustangs beat the Upper Lake Cougars 25-17, 25-10, 25-23 in non-league varsity volleyball action Tuesday night in Petaluma.

Aimee Schaefers led the Cougars (3-3) at the net with seven kills and nine blocks. Alyssa John and Alyson Gomez anchored the defense, John with 19 digs and Gomez with 15. John also had two blocks.

“We were aware that it was going to be a tough match going in,” Upper Lake head coach Dani Paige Gudmundson said. “St. Vincent has a strong team this year but so do we. We were hoping to put up a good fight but we struggled to get something going. We had moments of strong serves followed by errors like serving into the net or out of bounds.”

Added Gudmundson, “There were also times when we had great rallies and coverage only to let the ball hit the ground right in front of us. We understand the areas we need to focus on now and we’re eager to get back to work tomorrow to prepare four our league opener on Thursday (at home against Cloverdale).”
