MIDDLETOWN >> Battle hardened after going 1-2 in the AAA bracket at the Jaycees Tournament in Crescent City over the weekend, the Middletown Middle School A girls basketball team roughed up Eagle Peak Middle School of Redwood Valley 41-13 in non-league action Monday in Middletown.
“My team played outstanding defense tonight,” Middletown head coach Shannon Williams said. “We came out of the gate on fire and ready to roll.
Leading 10-3, Middletown put the game away with a 15-0 run en route to a 29-11 halftime advantage.
“Although we had to pull out of the press (because of league rules), I challenged my girls in the second half to not allow them to score and they basically succeeded with only one Eagle Peak basket in the entire second half,” Williams said.
Emma Davis led the Broncos, who pulled down 43 rebounds, with nine points while Anaya Kilstrom added six points and a team-best nine rebounds. Middletown also racked up 23 steals, six of them by Avery Peterson. Jaquelin Nunez finished with eight points while Alina Kilstrom and Alynna Jimenez-Cruz each had six.
Middletown’s teams are home Wednesday to play Upper Lake.
In the B game, Middletown held on for a 26-24 win despite a series of turnovers in the final seconds.
Katera Gotz led the Broncos with seven points, three rebounds and three steals while Rylee Gabbert had six points and seven rebounds.
“It was a slow start for us,” Middletown head coach Erika Galvan said. “One of my starting posts went down with an ankle injury and it took us time to get our groove going.”
Middletown led 13-11 at the half.
