YUBA CITY >> Lower Lake High School’s girls and boys wrestling teams turned in a strong showing Saturday during the Battle for the Buttes tournament in Yuba City.

The Trojans sent 23 wrestlers – nine girls and 14 boys – to the competition.

Girls

No. 1 seed Riley Givens placed second at 105 pounds, her only loss coming in the finals to a Yuba City senior.

No. 3 seed Greer Mayer lost her first match but battled all the back in the consolation bracket to take third at 110 pounds. Her only loss came to the eventual second-place medalist.

“All the other girls wrestling tough and got some good, valuable lessons that they should carry to their next matches,” Lower Lake head coach Danny Cuellar said.

Boys

“We had some awesome matches,” Cuellar said of Lower Lake’s boys.

Arturo Gudino, the tournament’s defending champion at 106 pounds, ended up second this year.

“Arturo wrestled really well with superb technique,” Cuellar said.

Jesse Saldana, a freshman, also ended up with a second-place medal.

“The kid can wrestle, very technical as well, though in the finals he fell short to a senior from Yuba City,” Cuellar said.

AJ Myers and Daniel Garner came in sixth.

The boys took seven out of 25 teams while the girls were eighth out of 25 teams.
