FREMONT >> The Lady Panthers, an under-14 girls team in the Konocti Youth Soccer League, won all four of their games and outscored the competition 14-3 in the process while finishing first in the California Cup tournament Nov. 23-24 in Fremont.
The Lady Panthers squad is made up of players from the Kelseyville and Upper Lake areas. They combined to beat opponents that are super-recreation level and club-level powerhouses. They had only two practices to prepare for tournament play but gelled just in time, according to head coach Patrick Mick.
“They worked great together,” Mick said.
In order of games played, the Lady Panthers beat North San Jose 2-1 in their opener, defeated Menlo Park 6-1 in the quarterfinals, beat seven-time defending tournament champion Lodi All-Stars, 1-0, in the semifinals, and capped their tournament with a 5-1 victory over Los Gatos in the championship game.
One of the highlights of the tournament, according to Mick, came following the team’s 1-0 nail-biter victory in the semifinals against the Lodi All-Stars.
“Our players and fans went wild when the final whistle blew as their coach was screaming at his players, ‘We just lost to a rec team!”
Ximena Herrin led the team with six goals and Hilianna Rico added four more. Paelynn Beall, Charlie Robbins, Amelia Darling and Maci Jones had one goal apiece.
“A true team effort led by our goalies Paelynn Beall and Charlie Robbins, defenders Kiera Mick, Carly Gleason and Kylee Solorio, midfielders Taylor Wood, Ally Abreu, Bella Espinoza, Maci Jones, and forward Ximena Herrin, Hilianna Rico, Genavieve Joaquin, Amelia Darling and Alessandra Zavala,” Mick said.
“Our goalies played superbly, our defenders played phenomenal, the midfielders controlled the important middle, and they couldn’t stop our scoring forwards,” Mick added. “Special shoutout to the scoring prowess of Ximena Herrin and Hilianna Rico, and stout physical defense by Kylee Solorio.”
The Lady Panthers were coached by Mick and his assistant, Diego Rico.
