FORT BRAGG >> If at first you don’t succeed, knee it in. That’s what Kat Wheelan did midway through the second half Thursday, lifting the Kelseyville Knights to a 1-0 road victory over Fort Bragg in North Central League I varsity girls soccer action.

In a scoreless deadlock that showed no signs of ending, Wheelan’s knee was the answer as a shot on goal ricocheted off her knee and into the net.

“From the start, the Knights controlled possession and set the pace of play, but it quickly became clear this was going to be a physical contest,” Kelseyville head coach Irma Rodriguez said of the team’s 12th shutout win of the season. “The defense held a strong, organized line, shutting down Fort Bragg’s attacks and keeping their offense off the scoreboard.”

Kelseyville improved to 8-0 in league play and 18-1 overall with the win.

“In the end, the Lady Knights’ resilience, teamwork and defensive grit proved too much for Fort Bragg,” Rodriguez said. “This was a well-fought, physical game tonight. I’m really proud of the team. A big thank you to all the parents who traveled to support the team. Your encouragement means so much.”

Kelseyville remains on the road Tuesday to play Upper Lake at 6:15 p.m.
