ARBUCKLE >> Mikaela Rico scored four times to lift the Kelseyville High School girls soccer team to a season-opening 5-1 victory over the Pierce Bears on Tuesday in Arbuckle.
Rico’s first goal, assisted by Kylee Denham, put the Knights (1-0) up just 12 minutes into the game although Pierce tied the game with a free kick as the first half ended in a 1-1 tie.
Rico scored three straight goals in the second half, two of them assisted by Jacky Chavez, to give the Knights a 4-1 lead. Denham added an insurance goal later in the half to make it 5-1.
Melanie Jimenez also had an assist.
“We started off a little slow in the first half, had a few shots at goals but the ball just wasn’t going into the net,” Kelseyville head coach Irma Rodriguez said. “Coming into the second half, the team was able to pull it together and play together.”
Standouts on defense for the Knights were Mya Ogo, Vanessa Reyes, Arionna Sanderson and Xiomara Arias.
“Overall, I’m very proud of these girls, they played a good game,” Rodriguez said.
Kelseyville returns to action Wednesday in Anderson at 4 p.m.
