Cougars drop 31-0 decision on the road to Cubs

FORT BRAGG >> A lack of practice time didn’t do the Northshore varsity youth football team any favors – and neither did Fort Bragg – as the host Cubs defeated the Cougars 31-0 Saturday night in a Mendo-Lake Empire Youth Football League game at Fort Bragg.
“This game was a hard loss with only two practices,” Northshore head coach Erik Sperber said.
The Lucas Fire burning in the mountains north of Upper Lake forced a limited practice schedule on the Cougars (0-2).
“It was hard for us to stay mentally focused, which was our downfall,” Sperber said. “We had a lot of mistakes in this game.”
While Northshore’s offense was held in check by Fort Bragg, there were some positives for the Cougars’ defense.
“Our defense played great and was able to make stops,” Sperber said. “Our corners and safeties had some big plays, but the lack of practice definitely showed up in the details on our special teams with multiple errors that kept us (pinned) deep on our side of the field.”
Among the defensive highlights were five solo tackles, three assists and one pass defended by Erik Sperber II, three tackles, one assist and one pass defended by Grayson Pena, three tackles, one assist and one pass defended by Zachary Isaacson, and three tackles from Colton Myers.
“We have a great group of athletes that are tough as nails,” Sperber said. “We just need to focus on the little details, which had a big outcome in our game.”
Northshore visits Cloverdale next Saturday.
