McCallister records career wins 300, 301 at NorCal Invitational

AMERICAN CANYON >> Donelle McCallister won her 300th career match as well as No. 301 on Saturday as the Kelseyville High School varsity volleyball team went 2-2 at the NorCal Volleyball Invitational in American Canyon.
The same team beat Kelseyville (10-2) twice. Bishop O’Dowd defeated the Knights 25-17, 25-22 in pool play and again in gold bracket play 25-15, 25-18. The Knights’ two pool wins came against Vallejo 25-6, 25-8 and Montgomery 25-14, 25-20.
“O’Dowd is a Division 3 machine with extremely competent hitters,” McCallister said. “I explained to the girls to continue to work on serve receive and defense. Their hitters were just consistently strong, and they found the weaknesses in our defense.”
Added McCallister, “On the other hand, these two matches with O’Dowd proved to be our best (for) serve receive. We participate in these tournaments to play stronger teams, and O’Dowd was definitely that.”
The Knights played much of the tournament without junior Riley Hanson, who sustained a foot injury in pool play against Montgomery.
“She started and I took her out after four points,” McCallister said. “I put Cassidy (Hanson) and Brooklyn (Young) into setting positions and they filled in well. The team adjusted to the changes fairly well.”
Tournament team leaders for the Knights were Cassidy Hanson with 22 kills and Olivia Bushey with 21; Madison Byrne with 22 digs; Young with 39 assists; and Cassidy Hanson with eight aces followed by Grace Peterson with six. Bushey and Byrne had solid kill percentages of 36 and 32, respectively.
“It was a good experience overall,” McCallister said of the tournament.
