SAN RAMON >> Lower Lake High School’s track and field athletes turned in strong showings Saturday during the East Bay Invitational in San Ramon.

In the varsity boys division, senior Steven Rich placed second in the shotput with a throw of 43 feet, 10 inches.

“This is the second meet this year Steven has thrown over a foot past his PR,” Lower Lake head coach Bobby Landgraf said. “He wants to be in the range of 45-46 (feet) and I think he’s got that in his wheelhouse this year.”

Raijhier McKneely took sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 16.95 seconds.

“Raijhier made his debut for the season in hurdles and I was excited to se it,” Landgraf said. “He can seven-step to the first hurdle and has a natural three-step in between with tremendous athleticism and potential in hurdles. We took extra time with him to work on his trail leg and aggressiveness to the hurdle. He’s been patient, just putting in the work until he was ready. His patience paid off big time with that PR. His goal is the NCS Meet of Champions in Dublin. If he keeps working the way he does, there is no reason he can’t qualify.”

Alfonso Rones placed fifth in the discus at 132-4 while teammate Jorge Carlos was eighth in 121-11.

“Coach Tristen (Ales) is showing time and time again how dominant he can make our throwers,” Landgraf said. “First Steven, then Jorge and Alfonso. It’s only April, so I’m very excited to see where these guys peak.”

Varsity girls

Jordan Stark placed seventh in the pole vault with a personal-best mark of 7-6.

“Jordan threw down a hard-earned PR,” Landgraf said. “I’m excited to see what’s coming next.”

JV girls

Lower Lake’s 4×100 relay team of Eleyna McTeague, Layla Naredo, Riley Givens and Stella Aleman placed second in 54.57 seconds.

“We had a rough handoff to start on the first exchange, but they picked it up very promptly with great splits toward the end.”

The 4×400 team of Laylonie Barocio, Naredo, McTeague and Givens came in third.

“It was a whole squad of kids who haven’t run a 400 in over a year, if ever,” Landgraf said. “They executed well and were aggressive.”

JV boys

Logan Case took third in the pole vault at 8-6.

“This is Logan’s second year pole vaulting and we saw some great looks from him going into the meet, but he throw down this 8-6 from out of nowhere,” Landgraf said. “He was incredibly close to clearing 9-0.”
