ST. HELENA >> Kelseyville outscored Casa Grande 22-10 in the fourth quarter to beat the Gauchos 50-45 in the opening round of the Sutter Home Classic on Thursday evening in St. Helena.

“Big fourth-quarter comeback tonight as we took our first lead of the entire game with under three minutes to play,” Kelseyville head coach Tim Conrad said. “Aubree Sperber hit a hug three to put us down by one, and then AJ (Wurm) took over with several fastbreak layups.”

Wurm, a senior guard, led the way with 23 points.

“We didn’t play our best,” Conrad said. “Our energy was low most of the game. We played just good enough to keep it close and then our depth and hustle helped pull out the comeback win.”

Mati Mateer also played a big part in the win with 13 points, nine rebounds, five steals and three assists. Wurm added five steals and three assists.

Other contributors for Kelseyville were Sperber with nine points and Grace Hobbs with five points, five steals and three rebounds.

Casa Grande led 14-10 after one quarter and 24-23 at halftime.

At Cloverdale, Brooke Watson came off the bench to score a team-leading 14 points as the Lower Lake Trojans knocked off the Hoopa Warriors in opening-round action at the Sandy Mac Memorial Tournament in Cloverdale.

Hoopa held an 11-2 lead after one quarter, but Lower Lake stormed back with a 16-4 second quarter to grab an 18-15 halftime lead. The Trojans were up 30-21 after three quarters.

“Brooke Watson came off the bench and led the team in scoring,” Tubbs said. “She gave us a nice spark we needed. (Jamiya) Lee-Ayers played a great game inside, getting to the foul line and creating shots for herself.”

Lee-Ayes finished with nine points while Irianna Milano had five and Mary Watson four.

“Used a number of girls who played man defense on their best shooter,” Tubbs said. Mary and Brooke Watson, Leanna Ortga and Aly Aguirre all rotated and played great defense.”
