ST. HELENA >> Everyone has a bad day now and then, and the Middletown Mustangs had a really bad one Thursday against Calistoga in the opening round of the Sutter Home Classic at St. Helena High School, falling 41-33 to the Wildcats in a first-round game.

“Just one of those games,” a frustrated Middletown High School varsity boys basketball coach Jake Diehl said in reviewing the Mustangs effort.

“It’s (making) adjustments with these kids right now,” Diehl said.

Middletown (0-2) won’t be at full strength until a handful of members of the football team are free to return to the court because of the Mustangs’ extended postseason run.

Harrison Brown’s 12 points, including two 3-pointers, led Middletown. Nalu Johnson added seven points. Willie Tadder and Cody Perez also had 3-pointers.

Middletown plays in the consolation semifinals Friday at 4 p.m. Tournament officials accommodated the Mustangs with their starting time so that they could return to Middletown in time to watch the football team’s NorCal championship game against Redding Christian at 7:30 p.m. The tournament wraps up Saturday.
