LAKEPORT >> The Kelseyville Knights returned to the win column Tuesday evening with a 55-29 North Central League I win over the Clear Lake Cardinals in junior varsity girls basketball action at Lakeport.
Kelseyville opened the season with 13 straight wins before dropping a non-league game at home to Fortuna on Saturday. Back on the court three days later, the Knights (5-0 league, 14-1 overall) needed a victory against the Cardinals (3-1) to remain atop the league standings and that proved to be no problem at all for coach Liz Berry’s squad.
“We came out ready to play after our loss on Saturday,” Berry said. “We outscored them 15-1 in the first quarter and the girls carried that momentum throughout the game.”
The Knights spread around the scoring, too. Grace Hobbs finished with 14 points and eight rebounds while Aubree Sperber also had 14 points and three steals. Yuri Montero contributed 10 points and seven rebounds while Jordyn Wurm just missed a double-double with nine points, 13 rebounds and three blocks. Riley Hanson had six points, seven rebounds and three assists.
“We struggled with our layups tonight, but the girls worked hard on the defensive end to make up for it,” Berry said. “We continued to share the ball offensively and it definitely showed that in our stats tonight.”
Clear Lake scoring was not reported.
Kelseyville hosts Willits on Friday in a non-league game. Clear Lake is home Wednesday against Colusa in non-league action. The Cardinals resume league play Friday in Lower Lake.
Lower Lake 45, Upper Lake 41
At Upper Lake, not even 28 points from Upper Lake’s Rylee Zimmerschied could prevent the Lower Lake Trojans from beating the Cougars in NCL I action.
Lower Lake’s Madelyn Garner scored 20 points for the second game in a row as the Trojans improved to 4-1 in league play and 11-2 overall.
“Defensively we were slow and not playing at the level we can,” Lower Lake head coach Jessica Wiley said. “We had difficulty on the press. It wasn’t the prettiest win, but we’ll take it.”
Garner sank four 3-pointers, giving her 10 in her last two games.
Leanna Ortega and Lily Milano each had seven points for Lower Lake while Brooklynn Tubbs had six.
Zimmerschied also had seven rebounds for the Cougars, now 1-3 in league play.
Upper Lake rallied to make it close after falling behind by nine points at halftime.
“Great team effort tonight,” Upper Lake head coach Mark Zimmerschied said.
Grace Abreu had three points and four rebounds for the Cougars. Magdely Garcia pulled down five rebounds.
Both teams are at home Friday for league games. Lower Lake hosts Clear Lake while Upper Lake entertains Middletown.
Middletown 34, St. Helena 13
At St. Helena, Middletown won its second straight league game at the expense of the St. Helena Saints.
Middletown is now 2-2 in league play and 8-7 overall.
