COTTONWOOD >> The Gladiators Wrestling Club piled up the points while winning the team championship Sunday during the Junior Eagles Tournament in Cottonwood.
The Gladiators finished with 210 points, beating out West Valley (178) and the Top Fuelers of Red Bluff (146) for top honors.
“It was a long day of wrestling, but the kids kept their composure throughout,” Gladiators head coach Peter Stephan said. “Most of the brackets were eight or 16 wrestlers, so we had a lot of kids wrestling multiple times in a row. They showed grit and the willingness to fight every inch until the last whistle.”
Added Stephan, “Even with it being late, the team stuck around to watch the last of the Gladiators compete. The camaraderie this teams show for one another can’t go without saying.”
Collecting individual firsts were Brantley Paminto, who went 5-0 with three pins and one technical fall while improving to 51-5 on the season; Maverick Paminto, who went 4-0 with four pins and is now 54-16 overall; Thomas Philpot, who went 4-0 with three pins, improving to 29-16 overall; Logun Whittle, who went 4-0 with three pins and is 33-7 overall; and Elijah Tucker (41-16), Gary Oakes (27-8), Brayden Paminto (31-21) and Alyssa Hopkins (12-13), all going 3-0 with two pins apiece.
Second-place medals went to Colin Crow, Alley Oakes, Sebastian James and Tyler Luciano, all 3-1 on the season, and to Olyver Dugger, who went 2-1.
Finishing third were Brodie McDaniel, who went 2-1, and Juliah Cruz, who went 2-2.
Fourth-place finishers were Jameson Philpot, Kaitlyn Crow, Jason Nehring, Nevaeh Barocio, Lilly Oakes, Joseph Szupello and Michael Garner.
The Gladiators return to action Sunday in Willits at the Bob Covig Tournament.
