UPPER LAKE >> Overcoming a determined effort by the Lower Lake defense, the Clear Lake High School girls soccer team scratched out two second-half goals to beat the Trojans 2-0 in the semifinal round of the Tyler Duncan Memorial Tournament on Thursday in Upper Lake.
The undefeated Lady Cardinals (4-0) play for the tournament championship against an opponent to be determined Saturday in Upper Lake.
Sellena Carbajal and Jeanette Luevano scored Clear Lake’s goals.
Clear Lake’s defense registered its third shutout and has allowed just one goal in its first four games.
“The defense is doing amazing work,” Clear Lake head coach Gustavo Carbajal said. “The midfielders are doing a great job controlling the field.”
Carbajal also gave a shoutout to his two assistants, George Garcia and David O’Brien.
“I think they should get credit for our amazing start this year,” Carbajal said.
A moment of silence was held before the game as Lower Lake honored the brother of a teammate who was killed in an automobile accident Wednesday night. Players and coaches from both teams as well as game officials took part.
