SAN MATEO >> The Never Say Die 16s club volleyball team experienced plenty of ups and downs over the weekend while participating in tournament action at San Mateo.
The team went 2-3, losing its first two matches and winning the next two before forfeiting its final match (it was rescheduled after most of the team had already departed the venue).
The 16s dropped a 25-12, 29-27 decision to Enspire U16-Joel, lost 25-12, 25-23 to the SF Juniors 16 Black, beat Red Rock 16-Ruth of Walnut Creek 26-24, 18-25, 15-11, and defeated Legend 16 by a 25-20, 25-13 final score. The 16s forfeited to Club Solano 16 Black.
“The 16s have been on a roller coaster the last couple of tournaments,” Never Say Die coach Morgan Psalmonds said. “Communication has been an issue along with not covering our hitters. They are playing a lot of great teams and they are realizing that we need to stay at a high level of play the whole game or we will lose.”
Moana Chamberlin led Never Say Die with 20 kills and 26 digs and Liv Bushey added 20 kills, six aces and 26 digs. Other team leaders were Grace Peterson with 39 digs, Olivia Arredondo with 25 assists, Brooklyn Young with 20 assists, and Jordyn Wurm with 11 kills, nine aces and 39 digs.
“After the slow start in the morning they began to work together and focus on their individual jobs,” Psalmonds said. “The highlight of the day was when we played against a highly competitive Red Rock team and gave them their only loss of the day. We were behind in the first set (23-15) and came back and won 26-24. Then we were down in the third set and also came back for the match win. They played a strong mental game and worked hard to find the open spots and made them change their game by taking out their setter. Now we just need to play like that all the time.”
