Host team registers four firsts, most pins during Sunday tournament at LLHS

LOWER LAKE >> Kailaya Philpot, Cristiano Lopez, Waylon Ivans and Amias Kennedy all secured first-place medals for the Gladiator Wrestling Club, which hosted the Takedown Before Christmas on Sunday at Lower Lake High School.
The tournament, a North Coast TOC qualifier, featured 305 wrestlers from various clubs throughout the state. The Gladiators came in first while registering the most team pins (39) and most combined team pins/tech falls (41).
“The tournament went smoothly with brackets in all divisions,” Gladiator head coach Jonathan Philpot said. “The Gladiators battled hard for their home county. It was great to see different talents of all ages.”
Kailaya Philpot won the middle school girls division while Alyssa Hopkins came in second and Nevaeh Barocio finished third. Fatima Rivera competed in two separate divisions, placing second and third.
In the second- and third-grade division, Lopez and Ivans both came in first while Elijah Tucker was second, Hector Barocio third, Jameson Philpot third, Vinicio Alejo fourth, Anastasia Garcia fourth and Jayce Hubert fourth.
Kennedy finished first in the TK/first-grade division and Zeus Romo came in second.
Fourth- and fifth-grade division placers were Javanni Alejo and Riley Garner, both taking second, and Elijah Tucker, who finished fourth.
Wrestling in the TOC middle school division was Cameryn Gamble-Ray, who came in second, Thomas Philpot, who came in third, and Michael Garner, Judah O’Keefe and Fernando Calvillo, all with fourth-place finishes.
“We had some upsets, but Gladiator Wrestling Club wrestled tough,” Philpot said. “Gladiator Wrestling Club appreciates all those who attended. We couldn’t do it without all of the wrestling community.”
