Track and field athletes compete in Gary Burton Invitational in Corning

CORNING >> Middletown and Clear Lake track and field athletes brought home several medals from the Gary Burton Invitational on Friday afternoon in Corning.
The event provided a final tuneup for Lake County’s athletes before next week’s Coastal Mountain Conference Championships on Friday at St. Helena High School.
Varsity girls
Makayla Mace of Middletown secured medals, which were awarded to the top three finishers in each event, with a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (17.17 seconds) and a third in the 100 (13.51). She just missed in the pole vault, placing fourth in 7 feet, 6 inches.
Also for the Mustangs, Cat Barriga finished third in the 1,600 (6 minutes, 16.25 seconds), fourth in the 800 (2:42.38) and fifth in the pole vault (7-0), and Krystal Ocken placed third in the shotput (31-5 and sixth in the discus (89-11).
Other top Middletown finishers were Isa Barnes, fourth in the 100 hurdles (17.84); Bailey Smith, fifth in the 400 (1:06.58); and Taylor Thompson, sixth in the shotput (28-4 ½).
For Clear Lake, Kaylah Billig won a second-place medal in the shotput (34-10 ½) and just missed a medal in the discus, taking fourth in 91-11.
Middletown placed fifth out of 17 teams and Clear Lake was 12th.
Varsity boys
Lake County varsity boys secured four medals, two each by Middletown and Clear Lake.
Middletown’s Bryan Sanchez and Bryton Caviness finished second and third, respectively, in the pole vault, Sanchez clearing 12 feet and Caviness 9-6.
Clear Lake’s David Wiles and Copper Garrity picked up third-place medals. Wiles ran 24.26 in the 200 while Garrity completed the 3,200 in 11:25.61. Garrity also placed seventh in the 1,600 (5:29.00) with Middletown’s Kayden Menzio (5:29.09) right behind him in eighth place.
Middletown’s Seth Watson was seventh in the discus at 118-4.
Middletown finished 11th out of 16 teams and Clear Lake was 13th.
JV boys
Middletown’s Ren Ueno won first-place medals in the junior varsity boys 800 (2:26.50) and 1,600 (5:18.43).
“In the 800 meters, Ueno got stuck behind the pack and was in the bottom three for the first 300 meters before making his way to the front of the pack during the back half of the race,” Middletown head coach Wyatt Hall said. “It was an exciting finish.”
Two of Ueno’s teammates, Cale McLean in the high jump (5-2) and Dylan Caviness in the pole vault (8-6) also won medals. McLean finished second and Caviness third.
Luke Mace of Middletown came in fourth in the 100 (12.40).
Also for the Mustangs, Landon Pisaro placed sixth in the 3,200 (11:48.03) and seventh in the 1,600 (5:37.55). Isael Haro was eighth in the 3,200 (12:07.28).
Middletown placed fourth out of 19 teams.
JV girls
Middletown JV girls medal winners were Jolene Holley, second in the high jump (4-10); Allyson Cherry, second in the pole vault (5-6); Crystal Duval, second in the discus (82-5 ½); and Madeline de la Torre, third in the shotput (26-6), with Duvan fourth (26-4).
Holley also placed fifth in the 200 (30.03) and Cora Krick was fifth in the 100 hurdles (19.89). De la Torre came in eight in the discus (71-10).
Middletown was seventh out of 17 teams.
