Middletown falls behind early, can’t recover in 7-5 setback to Cloverdale

MIDDLETOWN >> Missing an opportunity to finish .500 in league play, the Middletown Mustangs dropped a 7-5 decision to the Cloverdale Eagles on Monday at Wes Martin Field in Middletown.
It was the North Central League I finale for Middletown (6-8 league, 10-11 overall) while Cloverdale (3-9, 7-11) still has a league doubleheader remaining with Lower Lake on Wednesday beginning at 1 p.m. in Cloverdale.
Cloverdale scored twice in the top of the first inning and held the lead the rest of the way. The Eagles, who hit three home runs, held leads of 4-0 and 7-3.
Cody Perez worked 3 1/3 innings and took the loss. He allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits, struck out two and walked none.
Jon Hawkins (2-for-4, triple) and Hunter Karp (2-for-3, RBI) led the Mustangs at the plate. Hayden Xavier (1-for-2) and Madden Sutton (0-for-2) also drove in runs.
Evan Robledo, a sophomore, homered twice for Cloverdale. Robledo connected for a solo shot in the top of the fourth and a two-run blast in the seventh. Oren Fichtelberg, a junior, hit a solo home run in the fourth.
