HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE >> Playing on their home course, the Middletown Mustangs nearly claimed their first win of the season before being edged out by St. Helena in a Coastal Mountain Conference South golf match on Thursday afternoon.

St. Helena clinched the CMC South title with a 389-392 victory over Middletown even though the Mustangs posted the two low individual rounds of the day, an 8-over-par 80 by Bohdi Moore and an 88 by David Sisson.

Technology came in third with 399, Sonoma Academy was fourth at 502, and Kelseyville’s team was incomplete (fewer than four golfers).

With two scoring matches remaining, St. Helena (19-1) wrapped up the conference race, mathematically eliminating their two closest pursuers, Technology and Middletown, both 10-10. Middletown entered the season as the two-time defending South champion.

While St. Helena will advance to next month’s section playoffs as the South champion, individual playoff berths will be determined by the 36-hole CMC South Championships. The first 18 holes will be contested next Thursday at Windsor Golf Club, and the final 18 on May 5 at Valley of the Moon Golf Club in Santa Rosa. Middletown’s Moore, the low scorer in all five CMC South matches held to date, is certainly the frontrunner to nail down one of those individual berths.

During Thursday’s play on the par-72 Hidden Valley Lake layout, Middletown’s Moore and Sisson were the only two golfers to shoot in the 80s. St. Helena had three golfers finish in the 90s – Burley Weeman (94), Nick Beck (96) and Andrew Mendes (97). Technology’s Devon Egebreth carded a 93.

Kelseyville had only two golfers tee it up. Sebastian Chavez finished with 109 and Caleb Lopez had 114. Other Middletown scores had Jimmy Reynold at 109 and Grant McMillian at 11
