KELSEYVILLE >> Jordyn Wurm connected for her first high school home run, a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth inning that turned out to be the difference in Kelseyville’s 5-4 victory over the Middletown Mustangs in North Central League I softball action Thursday in Kelseyville.
Wurm, the Knights’ freshman catcher, also found herself on the receiving end of a combined no-hitter by Kelseyville pitchers Morgan Rogers and Ashlyn Wurm. Rogers worked four innings for the victory and Ashlyn Wurm finished for the save.
Kelseyville head coach Brittany Rumfelt said the victory was particularly gratifying given the team’s previous outing, a five-inning 10-0 loss on Tuesday at Lower Lake.
“We came off a bad loss, where we as a team needed a reality check,” Rumfelt said. “They handled it well and came out as a team, and it was fun to be a part of.”
Kelseyville improved to 5-4 in the league standings and 5-8 overall while Middletown (2-7, 5-9) lost its fifth in a row.
Jordyn Wurm and Rogers had two hits apiece for the Knights. Kat Wheelan (1-for-3), Ashlyn Wurm (1-for-3), Josie Keithly (1-for-3) and Gemma Lewis (1-for-3) drove in Kelseyville’s other runs.
“Rogers and Ashlyn Wurm threw well, throwing a combined one-hitter, and we had great catches in the outfield,” Rumfelt said. “I am very proud of the team today.”
Taylor Thompson went 1-for-4 for the Mustangs. Losing pitcher Taluelah Madrid went the distance, striking out seven and walking none while allowing eight hits.
Both teams return to action Tuesday when Kelseyville travels to league-leading St. Helena and Middletown visits Lower Lake.
