UPPER LAKE >> One out away from being the losing pitcher in what would have been an 8-7 Mountain Vista victory, Upper Lake’s Bella Stillman re-wrote the ending of this game script, smacking a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning for a walk-oA 9-8 victory over the Lancers in middle school softball action Wednesday afternoon in Upper Lake.

Stillman made herself the winning pitcher in the process as she worked all six innings for the Wildcats, striking out 10.

“It was a great win today, but our girls have to keep their heads in the game because we got more opponents to face that we haven’t seen yet,” Upper Lake head coach Derick Hughes said.

Kelseyville also received a complete-game effort from its pitcher, Paelynn Beall.

“Paelynn pitched pretty well, but our defense didn’t help her today,” Mountain Vista head coach Patrick Mick said. “We made way too many fielding and throwing errors. Silly mistakes on the basepaths didn’t help either, costing us at least three or four runs.”

Stillman not only ended up with the pitching win for Upper Lake, but she went 3-for-3 with a double and four RBIs at the plate. Marina Quiett (3-for-4), Jordyn Parker (2-for-3, double) and Charlie Robbins (2-for-3, double) also hit the ball well for the Wildcats.

For Mountain Vista, Beall, Brooke PoA, Madi Byrne, Gabby Keyes and Carly Gleason each had two hits. Mountain Vista hosts Fort Bragg on Monday.

“Even though our bats weren’t connecting, our defense improved since our last game,” Lucerne head coach Fred Miller said, citing the strong play in the field from catcher Ally Abreu, shortstop Sophie Basurto, third baseman Aliana Smith and first baseman Chevelle Sprague.

Sprague and Lola Kelly had hits for Lucerne.

“Overall we cleaned up our defense and everyone stayed engaged,” Obsidian head coach Luis Perez said of the Bears’ performance. “Sometimes it’s the little things that matter the most.”

Obsidian catcher Lexi Mitchell gunned down would-be base stealers with throws to second baseman Sparks.

Analayah Beck had a hit for the Bears. Obsidian, now 2-1 in league play, travels to Upper Lake on April 21.
