Broncos defeat Terrace Middle School to claim championship pennant

LAKEPORT >> Outscoring Terrace School 10-0 in overtime, the Middletown Middle School A girls basketball team beat the Vikings 60-50 on Saturday in the championship game of the Lake County Junior Athletic League postseason tournament in Lakeport.
Terrace forced the overtime against the Broncos, the undefeated regular-season league champions, with an 11-0 run to end the game, including a buzzer-beating layup by Amia Jon that tied the score 50-50 at the end of regulation.
Middletown’s Anaya Kilstrom earned MVP honors for her 21-point performance in the finals. Emma Davis, named to the All-Tournament team along with teammate Grace Williams, also figured prominently in the victory with eight points and a team-leading 12 rebounds and six steals. Alina Kilstrom added 12 points and Jaquelin Nunez added eight.
“That was an absolute battle,” Middletown head coach Shannon Williams said. “Terrace played a phenomenal game. Their girls are great athletes and showed good sportsmanship, too.”
Middletown took a 26-23 lead into halftime.
“We started and finished our season adhering to our team motto and the selflessness of our team carried us through. The team’s motto is ‘I am strong because my teammate is strong. Her success is my success,’” Williams said.
Middletown advanced to the championship game with 40-23 victory over Mountain Vista Middle School on Friday in the semifinals. The Broncos scored the game’s first 11 points, led 19-9 by halftime, and never looked back.
“Once again it was a full team effort,” Williams said. “Every girl who stepped on that court for us was contributing in some way.”
Davis led the Broncos with 10 points and eight rebounds, Williams finished with eight points, Alina Kilstrom had six points, and Nunez contributed five points and eight rebounds.
“Special credit to Avery Peterson who really stepped up and played lockdown defense,” Williams said.
