Bears claim Lake County Junior High Athletic League championship with 9-5 victory

MIDDLETOWN >> Allison Bobbitt’s home run and four RBIs helped propel the No. 2-seeded Obsidian Bears to a 9-5 win over No. 1 seed Middletown in the championship game of the Lake County Junior High Athletic League softball postseason tournament Saturday in Middletown.
Bobbitt not only went 3-for-4 at the plate, but she pitched a complete game, striking out 11.
“Middletown is a very well-coached team, but we did a great job capitalizing on opportunities and playing smart softball,” Obsidian head coach Luis Perez said.
Heather Warren went 1-for-2 with three RBIs for Middletown and Emmie Hernandez went 1-for-1 with a RBI. Losing pitcher Peyton Beehler struck out eight and walked two in 3 2/3 innings.
For Obsidian, Kailayah Philpot went 2-for-2 and Emilynn Sparks went 2-for-3.
“We worked station to station and stayed disciplined on the bases, and didn’t get greedy trying to force extra bases,” Perez said. “The girls took what the game gave them, and it paid off.”
Added Perez, “Overall, I’m incredibly proud of this team and everything they accomplished this season. I’m also proud of how much junior high softball in Lake County has continued to grow over the last few years.”
Middletown advanced to the championship game with a 7-5 win over Upper Lake, breaking a 5-5 tie with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Beehler worked 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the pitching win. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Middletown batting leaders were Hernandez (3-for-3, two RBIs), Brennah Genetiano (1-for-2, triple, RBI), Warren (1-for-3, triple, RBI) and Chloe Berry (1-for-1, RBI).
Obsidian defeated Mountain Vista 8-4 to reach the finals. No results were reported.
Upper Lake beat Mountain Vista in the third-place game. No results were reported.
