CORNING >> Corning built a 2-0 lead, but the Kelseyville Knights battled back on the strength of Mikaela Rico’s hat trick to beat the Cardinals 4-3 in non-league girls soccer action Tuesday in Corning.
Rico scored three straight goals, her third coming near the midway point of the second half, to put Kelseyville (4-5) ahead to stay. Kat Wheelan picked up what would prove a huge fourth goal with six minutes left in the game to make it a 4-2 lead. Corning scored on a penalty shot with four minutes left to make it 4-3.
Rico’s first goal came late in the first half to cut Corning’s lead to 2-1 at halftime. She tied the game in the 55th minute, and her third goal, assisted by Vanessa Reyes, completed the hat trick.
“We, my assistant coach Omar Rodriguez and I, made some changes in the lineup and it seemed to make a difference, even though the first half still wasn’t the girls’ best,” Kelseyville head coach Irma Rodriguez said. “The first two goals the Cardinals made in the first half were from some errors. I had to really go on the girls at halftime because we really needed this win and they went out there in the second half, played hard and fought hard to get this win.”
Added Rodriguez, “I’m very proud of the girls every game no matter what.”
Kelseyville opens its North Central League I schedule Thursday in St. Helena at 4 p.m.
