CORNING >> Kelseyville scored first for the second game in a row, but the Knights couldn’t get more than Luis Valdovinos’ unassisted goal in the first half of a 3-1 non-league varsity boys soccer loss to the Corning Cardinals on Tuesday in Corning.

“Corning is a really good team,” Kelseyville head coach KC White said. “They are extremely talented at all levels. They are ranked quite high on MaxPreps, and we hung tough with them. My team led at halftime and pushed them with everything they had tonight. I’m proud of the fight my team exudes every time out there. We have been in almost every single game but have been unable to cross the finish line in first place.”

Valdovinos took advantage of a Corning miscue in the 24th minute, a back pass to the keeper. Valdovinos got there first and knocked the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead.

Kelseyville led the game until the 48th minute when Corning pulled even. The Cardinals (5-1-1)n  moved ahead to stay in the 58th minute and added to the lead in the 66th minute, a goal White called “questionable.”

“We saved the goal, but the line judge ruled that it crossed the goal line,” White said. “I didn’t have a vantage point to judge, but my players that were there were adamant it didn’t go in. That call didn’t go our way, unfortunately.”

Multiple Kelseyville players went the entire way.

“Playing 80 minutes is not easy,” White said. “It required a lot of running, a lot of focus, and a lot of determination to keep fighting, especially when you’ve given up the lead. “We are becoming stronger mentally at the right time.”

Valdovinos scored his third goal in two games as the Knights fell to 0-8-2 on the season.

“He is beginning to play with urgency as his high school soccer career wraps up,” White said.

Kelseyville opens its North Central League I schedule Thursday in St. Helena. The varsity girls play at 4 p.m. followed by the varsity boys at 6 p.m. on the school’s football field. A junior varsity boys game takes place at 4 p.m. on an adjacent field.
