CLOVERDALE >> The Lower Lake Trojans varsity youth football team closed out a 6-2 regular season with a 34-0 victory over the Cloverdale Chargers on Saturday night in Cloverdale.
Lower Lake plays Willits (7-1) in the semifinal round of the Mendo-Lake Empire Junior Football League playoffs Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Cloverdale High School. The winner advances to the championship game the following Saturday and will face the Middletown (8-0) vs. Northshore (5-3) semifinal-round winner.
The Trojans wasted no time taking a lead against Cloverdale. After Cloverdale received the opening kickoff, the Chargers fumbled on their first play from scrimmage and Lower Lake recovered the ball at the Cloverdale 37-yard line. The Trojans scored moments later on a Roy Percoats run. Ismael Orozco’s conversion kick made it 8-0.
Lower Lake built on its lead from there, driving 72 yards on its next possession and scoring on another Percoats run. Orozco’s conversion kick increased the Trojans’ lead to 16-0.
Percoats scored his third rushing touchdown, this one coming in the second quarter, and his punt return for another score gave the Trojans a 28-0 halftime lead.
Percoats’ fifth touchdown of the day, coming on a run in the fourth quarter, made it 34-0.
“Our offensive line did a really good job all night opening up holes for our backs,” Lower Lake head coach Mark Garner said. “Our defense also played really well all night.”
Damion John recovered one fumble, caused another and had two tackles that resulted in Cloverdale losses. Defensive tackle Damion Giambra also had a good night with four tackles and a fumble recovery.
“It was a great team effort by everyone,” Garner said. “I’m really proud of how our coaches have prepared our team each week. They have done a tremendous job all season long.”
