LOWER LAKE >> In what turned out to be a three-game sweep for the Lower Lake Trojans in Mendo-Lake Empire Junior Football League action against the Kelseyville Chiefs on Saturday in Lower Lake, the Trojans’ pee wee squad posted a 14-6 victory at Gordon Sadler Field.

Lower Lake (2-0) had 165 rushing yards in the win, including a team-best 95 on 12 carries from Vinnie Steffen, who scored one of the team’s two touchdowns. Maxx Wilkins had the other score, that on a 2-yard run. Wyatt Hooten finished with 60 yards on 10 carries.

“Kelseyville had a strong defensive line, but we made some changes and managed to rush for 165 yards,” Lower Lake head coach Daniel Hooten said. “We still are having too many broken plays to put more points on the board, but we have two weeks to work on that, and we will be ready to face off with Willits (2-0), who we balled out with last year during the playoffs.”

Lower Lake defeated Willits 19-6 in the semifinals of the pee wee playoffs a year ago before going on to beat Westshore in the championship game.

All of the league’s teams take the Labor Day weekend off before returning to action Sept. 6. Pee wee action in Willits starts at 3:30 p.m. The junior varsity contest follows at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity game begins at 7:30 p.m.
