UKIAH >> Old teammates met up on the volleyball court Wednesday as Mendocino College hosted Butte College and City College of San Francisco in non-conference women’s action in Ukiah.
Clear Lake High School Class of 2023 graduates were represented on both sides of the court during Butte College’s 25-12, 24-26, 25-17, 25-20 win over Mendocino College. Abby Mertle, former middle hitter for the Cardinals, recorded a handful of kills for Butte while her Clear Lake teammates, Montana Wells and Stella Hill, played for the Eagles.
Wells led Mendocino College with 12 kills and also had four blocks and two digs while Hill finished with 13 digs, five kills, two blocks and one ace.
“We started off slow and we missed five serves in the first set … that hurt us,” Mendocino College head coach Kat Edmonds said. “We weren’t aggressive enough to score and put the ball down. We are fully capable of doing so and in sets we are aggressive, we win.”
Added Edmonds, “Montana Wells played well for us and was aggressive at the net all game. That’s what we need from all our hitter sin every set.”
Other Mendocino standouts were Cora Holley (Middletown) with nine kills and two digs, and Jayden Paulich (Kelseyville) with 26 assists, 10 digs, two kills and one block.
Mendocino College bounced back with a 25-19, 25-12, 25-19 win over City College of San Francisco in a late match. Wells finished with nine kills, Hill had seven and Holley six. Aily Chavez (Willits) contributed seven digs, one kill and one block while Paulich finished with 26 assists, six aces and one kill.
“Huge team win,” Edmonds said. “Everyone contributed.”
Mendocino College (5-14) hosts a non-conference tri-meet Friday, Sept. 27, its final tuneup before the start of conference play Oct. 2 at home against Solano. The Eagles play Siskiyous at noon and College of the Redwoods at 2 p.m.
