Mendo Eagles drop a pair

Women’s volleyball team has a tough day on the court

FREMONT >> The Mendocino College women’s volleyball team had a tough day at the office Saturday, dropping a pair of non-conference matches at Ohlone College in Fremont.

One day after beating Columbia and City College of San Francisco in straight sets, the Eagles dropped matches to Porterville and host Ohlone College.

“We played sluggish and couldn’t get into a groove,” Mendocino College head coach Katherine Edmonds said of the loss to Porterville. “We played better (against Ohlone), we just couldn’t get our offense going and stayed too much on defense against a hard-hitting team.”

Porterville beat Mendocino 25-19, 23-25, 25-18, 25-21 while Ohlone defeated the Eagles 25-18, 25-17, 25-16.

In the loss to Porterville, Maddy Brewster (Clear Lake) finished with a team-high 10 kills and also had nine digs. Stella Hill (Clear Lake) put up a team-leading 15 digs to go along with nine kills, Cora Holley (Middletown) added nine kills, and Jayden Paulich (Kelseyville) finished with 37 assists.

Against Ohlone, Breanna Pyzer (Middletown) put up a team-best 13 digs, Brewster added 10 digs and four kills while Hill finished with nine digs and six kills.

The Eagles finish their four-match weekend 2-2 and are 3-6 on the season.

“Overall we are happy with the productive weekend,” Edmonds said.

The Eagles return to action Tuesday in Angwin against Pacific Union College at 5 p.m.
