Team improves to 3-4 by beating Columbia, City College of San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO >> Behind the setting of Jayden Paulich and good overall team defense, the Mendocino College women’s volleyball team scored straight-set wins over Columbia and City College of San Francisco during non-conference action Friday in San Francisco.
Mendocino (3-4) beat Columbia 25-20, 25-14, 25-16 and City College of San Francisco 25-16, 25-18, 25-13.
The Eagles piled up the digs against Columbia, Aily Chavez (Willits) leading the way with 14, Stella Hill (Clear Lake) and Maddy Brewster (Clear Lake) adding 11 and nine, respectively, and Breanna Pyzer (Middletown) chipping in eight more.
“Defense played great and carried us through the win,” Mendocino College head coach Katherine Edmonds said.
Montana Wells (Clear Lake) anchored the offense with nine kills while Cora Holley (Middletown), Hill and Brewster added seven apiece. Paulich (Kelseyville) finished with 37 assists.
“The team played really well together and is starting to gel,” Edmonds said.
Against City College, Paulich finished with 28 assists but also had seven aces, all of those aces coming in the third set. She stepped to the service line with the score tied 8-8 as the Eagles began to pull away, opening up a 17-8 lead.
“This was definitely a team win,” Edmonds said. “Everyone contributed, especially at the service line with 14 aces.”
Holley had a big game at the net with 12 kills, Wells finished with five kills and four blocks, Brewster added five kills, nine digs and two aces, Hill had four kills, eight digs and two aces, Jaydyn Poe (Upper Lake) contributed three kills and six digs, and Pyzer had four aces.
Mendocino returned to action Saturday against Porterville and Ohlone College at Ohlone College in Fremont.
