Wells, Hill spark Eagles in 52-34 win

Former CLHS standouts help Mendocino College nail down first victory

UKIAH >> The Mendocino Eagles used a big first half to defeat Contra Costa 52-34 in non-conference women’s college basketball action Thursday night in Ukiah.

Mendocino (1-1) outscored Contra Costa 15-5 in the first quarter and 35-16 in the first half.

Sophomores Montana Wells and Stella Hill, both Clear Lake High School graduates, led Mendocino with 18 and 14 points apiece. Karlee Zimmerschied, an Upper Lake graduate, added seven points, including two 3-pointers.  While Wells finished with a double-double, pulling down 12 rebounds, it was another Clear Lake High graduate, Madison Brewster-Ramirez, who led the team with 16 boards. Wells also had a team-best seven steals.

Mendocino opened the 2024-25 season Tuesday with a 62-40 against Los Medanos in Pittsburg. Wells had 16 points, Hill eight and Zimmerschied six.

Mendocino returns to action Jan. 2 at Napa Valley College. The Eagles’ next home game is Jan. 4 against Solano.
