FAIRFIELD >> The Mendocino College women’s volleyball team fell in three sets to both Sacramento City and Santa Rosa Junior College during non-conference action Friday in Fairfield.

Sacramento City beat Mendocino College 25-19, 25-17, 25-12 in the early match despite 12 kills by Cora Holley (Middletown) and 20 assists and 14 digs from Jayden Paulich (Kelseyville). Makayla Mace (Middletown) added six kills and five digs.

“We came out hot in the first set,” Mendocino College head coach Kat Edmonds said. “It was some of the best volleyball we’ve played yet. We played our positions well. Sac City is a good squad.”

The Eagles struggled later in the day against SRJC, falling 25-12, 25-22, 25-18.

“The wheels completely fell off in our second match,” Edmonds said. “It was pretty chaotic, and the girls were just not mentally there. SRJC had a good block, and we struggled to get anything going. We let SRJC determine the temp of the game, and we just didn’t play our game. That’s all there is to it.”

One bright spot was the play of Emily Gersalia (Clear Lake), who had 15 digs.

“Emily really played well for us,” Edmonds said. “She played scrappy and did what we needed her to do.”

Paulich also had 15 digs as well as 16 assists. Holley led the team with 10 kills while Mace added five kills and seven digs.

Mendocino College, now 3-6, returns home Friday to play Siskiyous at noon and Redwoods at 2 p.m.
