SANTA ROSA >> Another day, another meet and another Middletown High School record for senior Hayden Xavier.
Breaking his own 200 record for the second meet in a row, Xavier beat the absolute best of the best Saturday while competing in the invitational field during the Twilight Invitational at Santa Rosa Junior College. His winning time of 22.07 seconds in the 200 meters broke his old record of 22.15 set on Friday at the NorCal Small Schools Invitational in Chico.
“He competed in the invitational portion of the meet, so he competed against the top eight entries in the evening under the lights,” Middletown head coach Wyatt Hall said.
After finishing second in the 100 (10.92 seconds) earlier in the evening, also in the invitational field, Xavier wasn’t lacking for motivation as the 200 start time approached.
“Xavier ran a good 100 meters, but just barely lost the race,” Hall said. “He used that loss to fuel his 200 meters. He was in lane six, so he wouldn’t be able to see much of his competition at the start, but he held the lead coming out of the turn and never let them catch up.”
Xavier’s teammate, Luke Mace, set a personal best in the long jump at 19 feet, 10.5 inches, which placed him 11th out of 40 competitors.
“He made some adjustment to his technique and hit his personal best in his first jump,” Hall said.
In the varsity girls division, Isa Barnes placed eighth in the triple jump (30-2.75). She also ran in the invitational field of the 100 hurdles, taking seventh (18.0), and in the invitational field of the 300 hurdles, placing eighth (55.78).
“Barnes had a solid day, also competing in the invitational portion of the meet in both hurdle events,” Hall said.
Middletown’s entire team returns to action Wednesday during a Coastal Mountain Conference meet in Lower Lake.
